BEWARE...JURY DUTY SCAM!
Jury Duty Scam
Pass this on to your grown children and anyone else you can think of. This has been verified by the FBI (their link is also included below). Please pass this on to everyone in your email address book. It is spreading fast so be prepared should you get this call. Most of us take those summonses for jury duty seriously, but enough people skip out on their civic duty that a new and ominous kind of fraud has surfaced.
The caller claims to be a jury DUTY coordinator. If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the Scammer asks you for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant. Give out any of this information and bingo, your identity was just stolen.
The fraud has been reported so far in 11 states, including Oklahoma , Illinois , and Colorado , AZ and more. This (swindle) is particularly insidious because they use intimidation over the phone to try to bully people into giving information by pretending they are with the court system..

An ancient proverb says, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” You have probably known people nearing the end of their life’s journey who looked back and said, “If only I had done things differently. . . . If only I had taken advantage of that opportunity when it came along.” Unfulfilled lives are filled with “if only’s”. They are the refrain of the timid souls whose lives were finished before they ever really got started. Life is filled with many opportunities -- for great successes and spectacular failures. It is up to you to seize the initiative, to take advantage of the opportunities that come your way. You are condemned to a life of mediocrity -- unless you get into action. Don’t delay; do it today!

"The heat is on."
It only takes a look at what is happening in Europe these days to understand why it’s crucial that the United States finds a solution to the debt ceiling issue. Not only have eight European banks recently failed a stress test, but last week there was news that Greek, Italian, Portuguese, and French "credit default swaps" (which are insurance policies against default) were trading at record levels. While the European Union is continuing to work to contain Europe’s debt problems and prevent a default in Greece (and elsewhere), these events bode a very important lesson for the US.
Why? Because solving our debt ceiling debate and finding a long-term plan for lowering our deficit and being fiscally sound will raise confidence in our debt and help the US keep its AAA credit rating from the various credit rating firms like Moody’s and Standard and Poor’s. This will help investors continue to see the US as the ultra safe haven for their money, which is a key aspect of our continued economic recovery.
Speaking of our economic recovery, there was some good news last week for the housing sector, as June Housing Starts and Building Permits were both reported better than expected.
Why? Because solving our debt ceiling debate and finding a long-term plan for lowering our deficit and being fiscally sound will raise confidence in our debt and help the US keep its AAA credit rating from the various credit rating firms like Moody’s and Standard and Poor’s. What is the most effective way to create and sustain great relationships with others? It's The 100/0 Principle: You take full responsibility (the 100) for the relationship, expecting nothing (the 0) in return.
Implementing The 100/0 Principle is not natural for most of us. It takes real commitment to the relationship and a good dose of self-discipline to think, act and give 100 percent.
The 100/0 Principle applies to those people in your life where the relationships are too important to react automatically or judgmentally. Each of us must determine the relationships to which this principle should apply. For most of us, it applies to work associates, customers, suppliers, family and friends.
• STEP 1 - Determine what you can do to make the relationship work...then do it. Demonstrate respect and kindness to the other person, whether he/she deserves it or not.
• STEP 2 - Do not expect anything in return. Zero, zip, nada.
• STEP 3 - Do not allow anything the other person says or does (no matter how annoying!) to affect you. In other words, don't take the bait.
• STEP 4 - Be persistent with your graciousness and kindness. Often we give up too soon, especially when others don't respond in kind. Remember to expect nothing in return.
At times (usually few), the relationship can remain challenging, even toxic, despite your 100 percent commitment and self-discipline. When this occurs, you need to avoid being the "Knower" and shift to being the "Learner." Avoid Knower statements/ thoughts like "that won't work," "I'm right, you are wrong," "I know it and you don't," "I'll teach you," "that's just the way it is," "I need to tell you what I know," etc.
Instead use Learner statements/thoughts like "Let me find out what is going on and try to understand the situation," "I could be wrong," "I wonder if there is anything of value here," "I wonder if..." etc. In other words, as a Learner, be curious!

This may strike you as strange, but here's the paradox: When you take authentic responsibility for a relationship, more often than not the other person quickly chooses to take responsibility as well. Consequently, the 100/0 relationship quickly transforms into something approaching 100/100. When that occurs, true breakthroughs happen for the individuals involved, their teams, their organizations and their families

It is far more difficult to be a builder of people and to create works of art, useful products, or profitable businesses. Make sure you are a builder, not a destroyer of people and things. When you criticize the actions or work of others -- your children, your employees, or others for whom you are responsible -- make sure your criticisms are positive and directed at the act, or the opportunity for improvement, not the individual. Include specific suggestions for their application and focus on the potential for success.

Fun Facts - and Activities - for Father’s Day!
Father’s Day is this coming Sunday, June 19, 2011. To help mark the occasion, here are some fun facts and a list of activities that can help you give Dad the gift of family memories.
One in a Million? According to the US Census Bureau, there are 70.1 million fathers across the US. Although they all share the experience of fatherhood, each dad is unique. That means, your dad isn’t just one in a million; he’s one in 70.1 million!

Simple, Special, and Inexpensive Activities for Dad
Go for a hike - If your dad enjoys nature and relaxing walks, plan a hike on Father’s Day. Here are some hiking tips and packing ideas that can make the day as safe as it is fun.
Visit a museum or history center - Whether your dad enjoys art or history, you’re sure to find a museum or history center in your area that will fit his interests. Plan the special day as a surprise and be sure to allow plenty of time to let Dad set the pace, so he can take his time. The American Association of Museums offers an online directory of museums near you. Try it today to search by city, state, and even the type of museum you want to visit.
Go fish - Take Dad to his favorite fishing spot for the afternoon. Of course, if Dad’s not much of a fisherman, consider pulling out a deck of cards and playing a game of Go Fish with the younger children. Take a few minutes to read the rules to Go Fish, as well as find other game ideas.
Play ball - There are plenty of baseball fields and open parks where the family can gather for a game of baseball with Dad. Whether you play a more competitive game of fastball or softball with older children or Wiffle ball with youngsters, it’ll be a day you all remember. Hand over the remote - Father’s Day isn’t always sunny and warm. But even if the weather doesn’t cooperate this year, you can still make the day special for Dad. Fill the frames - You don’t need to spend a lot of money to give Dad the perfect gift. If you have some old picture frames around the house that are sitting in a closet or have out-of-date photos in them, consider giving them a new look. An inexpensive can of paint and some new photos of the kids can go a long way. If the children are older, consider reprinting some old photos of the kids when they were younger. Or you could even take some before and after photos of the kids by retaking photos of them today in the same place and pose of an old photo. Then combine the old and new photos using a photo editing software program or simply place the photos side-by-side in a frame. It’s a gift any dad will be sure to cherish.
Watch home movies - Don’t just limit your movie watching to Dad’s favorite Hollywood films. Instead, spend some time watching some of those home movies that feature Dad and the kids - or even older home movies of Dad when he was a kid. Daylight Saving Time (DST) begins on Sunday, March 13, 2011. The way we refer to time zones also changes. For example, Eastern Standard Time (EST) becomes Eastern Daylight Time (EDT).
But remember, some areas of the United States don’t use DST, such as Arizona, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, the US Virgin Islands and American Samoa.
Benefits of Daylight Saving Time
Despite some concerns, Americans overwhelmingly like Daylight Saving Time. There is simply more sunlight in the evenings to enjoy the outdoors and get things done. Plus, additional hours of daylight can help save energy on a national scale - as much as 100,000 barrels of oil per day according to some estimates.
And brighter is safer. Studies have shown that the DST shift reduces traffic accidents. Additionally, a study by the US Law Enforcement Admin also determined that crime is consistently lower during DST, with violent crimes down as much as 10% to 13%. For many crimes, like mugging, darkness is a factor--so more light in the evening hours reduces these types of crimes.

Not everyone benefits from DST. For example, many farmers say that DST has a negative impact on their livestock’s natural schedules. The airline industry also reports that it costs millions of dollars to adjust time schedules - and even then, airlines report numerous problems with international flight connections during the transition time since DST isn’t followed uniformly around the world.

A man was actually able to avoid the draft for the Vietnam War using a Daylight Saving Time loophole. When he was born, it was just after midnight, DST. When he was drafted, he successfully argued that in his home state of Delaware, standard time - not DST - was the official time for recording births. So he was technically born on the previous date - which had a much higher draft lottery number - and he was able to avoid being drafted.
In September 1999, the West Bank was on Daylight Saving Time, while Israel had switched back to standard time. A group of West Bank terrorists prepared some timed bombs. Unfortunately for them, they misunderstood the time change and the bombs exploded early - killing the terrorists themselves rather than the intended victims, two busloads of innocent citizens.
In the 1950s and 60s, each state and locality was permitted to choose start and end DST dates as they desired. During 1965, Minneapolis and St. Paul - which are considered one metropolitan area - didn't agree on start dates, and for a period of time, these Twin Cities had a one hour time change between them. And on one Ohio to Virginia bus route, passengers technically had to change their watches seven times in 35 miles!
To keep to their published timetables, Amtrak trains cannot leave a station before the scheduled time. So when the clocks "fall back" in the fall, all trains that are running on time actually stop at 2 am - the official time of DST change - and wait one hour before resuming their routes. In the spring, the routes instantaneously become one hour behind schedule, but they just keep going and do their best to make up the time.
Finally, since many electronic devices and computer programs are set to adjust to DST based on the old dates, they may not change automatically on March 13. So, you’ll want to double-check all of your devices and confirm that the time is correct.

Birmingham area night owls can catch total lunar eclipse tonight
If the weather is clear tonight, the sky may turn spectacular after midnight as the moon sails through a total eclipse.
Total lunar eclipses are dramatic and visually compelling. Often the moon looks red-orange because sunlight, which is bent as it moves through the Earth's atmosphere, has its blue wavelengths scattered away, leaving only the warmer hues.
"Many people also find that the eclipsed moon looks much more three-dimensional, hanging in front of the background stars, than the dazzling full moon does," said Bill Keel, professor in the physics and astronomy department at the University of Alabama. "There is much more of a sense that this is a ball."
Depending on the amount of clouds and volcanic dust in the atmosphere where the sunlight is bent, the moon could also appear dark gray.
Keel will hold a public eclipse watch beginning at 11 tonight and continuing through 3 a.m. Since the moon doesn't begin to move into the Earth's shadow until 12:33 a.m., visitors will first have a chance to look at the massive planet Jupiter.
Total eclipse begins about 1:41 a.m. and lasts until about 2:53 a.m., according to the website MrEclipse.com.
If people stay late enough, they will also have the chance to see the massive ringed planet Saturn after it rises, Keel said.
"The eclipse is a chance to watch orbital motions play out," Keel said. "And lunar eclipses were the first evidence that the Earth is round, because the shadow of Earth is curved as it moves across the face of the moon."
Also tonight, University of Montevallo professors will photograph the moon at the James Wylie Shepherd Observatory, said Michael Patton, one of the professors. The observatory's 20-inch scope will be tied up with cameras, but public visitors can look at the eclipse through a smaller telescope and some very good binoculars, Patton said. The observatory is three miles from the main campus.
"Weather permitting, we will be there by 12:30 a.m. and will stay until the end or until we fall asleep," Patton said. "If it is cold, visitors should dress appropriately and consider bringing hot chocolate."

While you are out enjoying the fall colors, pumpkin farms and Halloween activities, take some time to prep your home - both indoor and outdoor - for winter with the below fall home maintenance tips!
Outdoor Fall Maintenance Tips
1.Clear debris out of you window wells, gutters, downspouts, and storm drains. This will allow the water to properly drain, minimizing standing water and stalling the freeze and thaw expansion process that often occurs during colder months.
2.Make sure the weather stripping on your windows and doors fit and is in good condition.
3.Clean your windows. Sparkling clean windows let in lots of sunlight that will help chase away winter's doldrums.
4.Look for broken or cracked glass and damaged screens or storm windows. Also, check for loose putty around glass panes.
5.Remove garden hoses from spouts, drain and store for the winter.
6.Check painted surfaces for water damage or mildew.
7.Insulate outdoor faucets, pipes in unheated garages, and pipes in crawl spaces with materials such as rags or newspapers.
8.Keep rodents out. In the winter months, all kinds of critters will be looking for a cozy spot. They don't need a lot of space to get into or under your home. Make sure all exterior vents are screened, and that there are no gaps underneath garage doors. Pet doors are another favorite access point for rodents.
9.Make sure your snow shovels and/or snow blower are in good shape. Check your shovel handle for possible cracks or breaks. Have the routine maintenance performed on your snow blower.
10.Fall is also the time to remove window screens and store in a safe place such as your basement or garage. Install storm windows to insure proper heating efficiency.

2.Replace your furnace filter.

5.Remove hair from drains in sinks, tubs, and showers.

OPPORTUNITY NEVER SNEAKS UP ON THOSE WHO STRADDLE THE FENCE OF INDECISION
Successful people are decisive people. When opportunities come their way, they evaluate them carefully, make a decision, and take appropriate action. They know that indecision wastes time that could be spent on more productive tasks. They also avoid unnecessary risks by implementing their decisions gradually. They don’t attempt to make every decision at the beginning. Each action is contingent upon the success of the one that preceded it. Benjamin Franklin, one of America’s wisest men, is said to have used a simple method to make difficult decisions. He drew a line down the center of a sheet of paper, and on one side he listed the "pros" of the decision; on the other, he listed the "cons." In addition to simplifying the decision-making process, the list also served as a graphic illustration of the advantages and disadvantages of any decision, regardless of its complexity. The impact of the decision could then be quickly and easily assessed.
